Punching Through The Pain

WHY THE TIME IS RIGHT TO SPEAK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH IN BOXING
ABOUT

British Boxing is on the crest of a wave. Heavyweight boxing sensation, Anthony Joshua is carrying the hopes of a nation on his shoulders as well as three of the four world title belts. And the Olympic Gold medalist continues to perform on the biggest possible stage, showing no signs he might wilt under the pressure.

In September, 'AJ' sold out Wembley Stadium for the second time in his career, stopping Alexander Povetkin in front of a near 90-000 capacity.

Whilst this publicity and pressure can appear to many as just all part of the course, the level of expectation on boxers, especially those in the public eye can prove too much.

Tyson Fury for one found it difficult to digest the scale of his achievement after he dethroned long-reigning world champion Wladimir Klitschko in Dusseldorf in 2015.

Rather than providing the catalyst for a long stint as champion Fury spiralled into depression, despite achieving a life-long dream.

Seeing a fighter with all the money in the world and all the belts in the division can paint a misleading picture of their true mindset.

This project will aim to investigate how wide the issue of depression is in Boxing and conversely if it can help those suffering with mental health issues.
